You are unique! Not unique in that you are weird or different but instead you are unique in that you are a one of a kind. You are not like anything else or anyone else in this world. No matter how much you look like someone else or act like someone else, you are nothing like them.

This is difficult for most of use because we are almost always compared to others around us. As a child we may have been compared to an older sibling or a close cousin. We would here, “Why can’t you be more like…” At work we are constantly judged by what someone else can do or doesn’t do. We are told that we must be as good if not better than so and so.

Even in church, as much as I hate to say it, we are constantly comparing ourselves. We feel like we have to be as good as or better than those sitting beside us in the pews. What really makes it hard is when you have a very successful retired minister as a member like I do. (I could never be as “good” as him!) Even among pastors there is this unspoken thing, it’s like we are in some kind of contest to see who can build the biggest church.

It does not have to be this way. Remember, we are unique. God never asks us to be more like anyone else with the exception of his Son, Jesus. We are not in a competition nor are we being compared by God to those around us. In fact God tells us it is unwise for us to do this in 2 Corinthians 10:12. “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”

We are unique. Each gifted in different areas, called to do different things. I don’t have to be better than you; I just have to be more like Jesus.
