In order to crack the “white only” system of
higher education in Georgia during the 60’s, black leaders decided they
needed to find two “squeaky clean” students that could not be challenge
for admission because of their morals, intellect, or educational grounds.
In a discussion about who might be chosen, Alfred Holmes immediately
volunteered his own son, Hamilton, the top black male student in the city.
Charlayne Hunter-Gault also stepped forward and expressed an interest in
applying to the university. The state of Georgia delayed admitting both
boys, saying it had no more room in the dormitories and the matter
eventually ended up in federal court. Judge Bootle ordered the university
to admit the two boys, who were qualified in every respect, and thus,
segregation ended at the university level in that state, and soon, the
nation. (Christian Today) |
