WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL

In order to crack the “white only” system of higher education in Georgia during the 60’s, black leaders decided they needed to find two “squeaky clean” students that could not be challenge for admission because of their morals, intellect, or educational grounds. In a discussion about who might be chosen, Alfred Holmes immediately volunteered his own son, Hamilton, the top black male student in the city. Charlayne Hunter-Gault also stepped forward and expressed an interest in applying to the university. The state of Georgia delayed admitting both boys, saying it had no more room in the dormitories and the matter eventually ended up in federal court. Judge Bootle ordered the university to admit the two boys, who were qualified in every respect, and thus, segregation ended at the university level in that state, and soon, the nation. Many of you probably remember that event. You may also remember that Attorney General Robert Kennedy declared in a speech not long after: “We know that it is the law which enables men to live together, that creates order out of chaos…And we know that if one man’s rights are denied, the rights of all men are endangered.”

Micah 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Justice may be universal, crossing all boundaries, but it always begins at the individual level. Who is it that you and I might treat more justly today?

God’s blessings and good flying to all!
